An OS X software based on the impressive code of XBMC open source software, the brain behind the creature (thanks Miguel Guillen for the info). And suddenly my TV has turned into a more than an interesting appliance. Now it tells me the weather forecast and shows me all the multimedia content from my hard drive in a pretty attractive interface by the way (nothing Apple’s Front Row didn´t really do so far), but it also gives me a piece of information about the movies I’m watching I couldn´t even imagine was accessible for free. And most of all it shows me hundreds of channels like YouTube, TED, Vimeo, CNN, FoxNews, Hulu, Miró, MTV, NBC, PBS, Joost, Flickr, Picassa, Channel Four, Arte… and it’s only been running for a week.
Today, when some screens start to include YouTube as the prefab configuration and they present it as the new television, or even on the same day that Steve Jobs is presumably introducing in San Francisco the new AppleTV, I find that what some insist on introducing as the television of the future, exists since 2003, translated to more than 30 languages and, as it’s happening more often every day in the net, has been developed by a group of more than 50 passionate programmers with no lucrative meaning who strongly believe that through collaboration people can get much further than individually (even if those individuals are huge brands). And, what’s even more surprising, without licensing fee for commercial use. Those dedicated to brand communication we can start dreaming of what this can become. They only ask interested parties to contact them for courtesy purposes, only for courtesy purposes. Well, Mr. Jobs, that AppleTV you’re about to introduce for 99 € might as well be damned good or it will become a beautiful box containing lots of XBMC and Plex Media Centers.

The other day I installed “Plex Media Center” in the Mac Mini that’s actually connected to my TV.
