Already the name sounds pretty good. It’s not me, or you, it’s us. And indeed we do transfer nowadays. Until now we were able to do it for free via services like yousendit, but… we were asked to sign up or use a pay-per-use mode which wasn´t that great anyway, and no matter what we were forced to suffer banners and/or a horrible design. Until now.
A dutch company (and we know dutch have always been good at transporting things) has made it all simple. Just write the address of whom you want to send it to in a little floating window, as well as your address, a little message if you want to, and select the file you want to send (up to 2 GB). Period. Meanwhile, the logo and the website’s overall look make the experience nice and pleasant (let’s hope we, the advertising professionals, don´t ruin those nice-looking backgrounds).
The business is of incredible simplicity. All the screen is advertising media that you see while your file is uploading as well as the person who receives it while the file is downloading. An incredible average visit time, even considering multi-task.
But what’s most surprising is that “wetransfer” (selected honoree at 2010 Webby Award) has applied in a new platform exactly the same advertising system that has been used for the last 100 years, while many others are thinking over and over how to reinvent the business model. Quoting Henry Jenkins, director of the comparative media studies program at MIT: “The key is to produce something that both pulls people together and gives them something to do… You don’t need to control the conversation to reap the benefits of the exposure”, or as Mark Zuckerberg said: “Communities have always been there. Instead, think about how you can help that community do what it wants to do.”
Wetransfer is still beta version and when asked if they will include video to their offer (so far the backgrounds are just still images), they answered they’re working on it. So if they switch from flash for html5 this looks more than promising.

That’s a good starting point, wetransfer.com.
